Leading with Connection
Natalie Johnson
As the pace of work continues to accelerate, it’s easy for connection to become an afterthought—something we assume will happen rather than something we intentionally create. In the short voice memo below, Natalie shares a change we recently made at Vidl Work to prioritize connection. If you’d like to go deeper on this idea, you can also read her recent article: As the World Evolves, We Must Prioritize Humans.

Meet Rob
Rob was a respected leaders in a government agency—but his culture was strained. Burnout was high, tension was constant, and while people stayed, few were energized.
Rob wanted things to feel different. He cared deeply about his team and his family. But every attempt to create space for his own well-being seemed to get pushed aside.
When we asked Rob why he didn’t use the fitness center just floors below his office, he said, “Could you imagine?! If someone saw me in that gym, I’d be on the front page of the newspaper.” It wasn’t about time. It was about what felt safe, and the message that sent to everyone else. What happened next shifted more than just Rob’s behavior.
Read the rest of Rob’s story, and what it reveals about how culture actually changes, in our book, Leading the Culture Journey.
